Every member of the team is kind, welcoming, and genuinely fun to be around. You can tell they’re incredibly talented, and honestly, their work speaks for itself.

Ruby has created such a special environment that really emphasizes learning and professional growth. Every time I visit, I hear about new techniques they’re exploring and skills they’re developing, which makes me feel like I’m always in the best, most up-to-date hands.

I’ve never had a haircut that felt this thoughtful and informed. I was given such a clear and detailed breakdown of my hair type, how my products interact with my hair, and why certain products and styles would work best for me. They also took the time to explain how different cuts would complement my lifestyle and routine.

What I appreciated most was how seen and understood I felt. They really listened to what I wanted while also guiding me with expert insight—explaining the “why” behind every decision. That level of care and transparency is something I’ve never experienced before with a stylist.

I even got to try hair tinsel, which was such a fun bonus!

I can personally speak to her helping me navigate the hair changes that accompany the hormonal roller coaster of multiple pregnancies and postpartum periods. She has guided me going to and from mid length hair to pixie and all the stages in between. She understands many different textures of hair, and I’ve witnessed her color transformations on other clients. I’ve been going to The Laboratory for quite some time now, and it’s become my go-to place for getting my hair back into shape while feeling completely comfortable being myself. The atmosphere is welcoming and authentic, with festive decorations during holidays that are so well done, I sometimes find myself wanting to stop by just to enjoy the vibe—even when I’m not scheduled for an appointment.
I typically get a regular trim (Ruby calls it “dusting” since I’m committed to keeping my length!) and a blowout. Ruby’s expertise is evident from the moment I walk in. She assesses the quality of my hair and makes thoughtful decisions about which products to use for washing and styling. Her attention to detail is impressive.
I’ve also tried her famous Underlights, which I highly recommend if you’re looking to add some hidden dimension to your hair. More recently, Ruby suggested I try fairy hair to add a little sparkle without committing to color. I absolutely loved it! It’s temporary and blends beautifully with my natural hair.
What really sets The Laboratory apart is the warm, genuine welcome I receive every time. Ruby is incredibly easy to talk to, and catching up with her during my appointments has become one of my favorite parts of the experience.
I also appreciate that Ruby is committed to growing her craft. She continuously pursues education and shares that knowledge with her team and aspiring stylists.

Highly recommend The LABoratory, April Fernandez, and Ruby Devine for collaborative adventures in color correction and design. They rescued me after I had applied a supermarket fashion color for Halloween 2023, that wouldn't wash out, when my daughter's wedding was to take place a few months later. I went to Alexis to fix a poorly-done balayage and fashion color that a different salon had botched. Alexis gave me baby-highlights and the correct fashion color. It was beautiful walking out of the salon and four months later and my hair still looks beautiful! The highlights were so nicely blended that the roots growing out looks intentional and the color faded to a lovely pastel. I was able to touch up the color with a custom mix they sell for about the same price as a drug store dye.
Also worth noting, their customer service is one of the best I’ve ever dealt with from a salon. They’re so easy to get ahold of, they respond promptly, and even when the stylist is booked out for weeks, they help me find a time that works for my schedule.

It’s like she plucks my exact thoughts from my brain of how I want it to look and translates it to real life. I've been seeing Josselyn, Ruby, and now Alexis for over 6 years now, and I can't recommend The Lab enough! I know how hard it is to find a good salon because when I moved 4 hours away for 2 years I tried, and it went horribly wrong. They've done everything from fix that mess to take me from very long to very short, to long again - blond lots of different ways/levels/tones, even fashion colors a few times - and have always kept the health of my hair as top priority.

They're comparably priced to local good salons, but the other great thing about coming here is that if your stylist isn't available for whatever reason (ie: mat. leave), Ruby makes sure you're taken care of with an equally well-trained stylist. Plus they have in-training staff who assist bigger projects (hold hair, get foils, etc) which really moves the appointment along! It's a very cooperative, and client centered environment, and I'm so glad I was referred to Joss all those years ago when she was just starting out with Ruby!...more

I absolutely love going to the LABoratory. Everyone is always so nice, the customer service is top notch. At every appointment I've had they do a consult with you before starting to work on your hair. I got fashion color for the first time and absolutely love it. I asked for it to be a little bit hidden since I cant do too much fashion color because of work and they nailed it. I also, took my mom to get her hair cut and they spent a little bit of time with her asking her questions to make sure she got what she was looking for. Cannot recommend this place enough! I inquired about Sofia fixing my hair that my previous stylist at another salon had left me with. Ruby reached out to ask me for current pictures of my hair, inspiration photos, and back story so she could set us up for success. Sofia paid attention to every little detail, held great conversation and stayed over an hour past closing time to make sure I left happy. If I had to sum it up in one word: Wow!

I had a full bleach out, fashion color, and cut with Kristy and Ruby. Both were so incredibly friendly and welcoming, and I felt comfortable and heard through the whole process.

Ruby was able to fix a terrible Great Clips cut (I know, I know) and she took my hair history and upkeep preferences into account while explaining the cutting/coloring process in great detail. She even mixed up a take-home color and threw in a product to help keep my hair color vibrant. What an icon. #RubyforPresident

Kristy was friendly and considerate throughout the whole process, which was a little over 7 hours, and made sure I had snacks. Bleaching a whole head of hair is no joke! Kristy's fashion color placement was great, and delivered the "kisses of pink" I was looking for without overpowering the overall gray look. She's a great stylist!

Ok I cannot sing enough praises for this salon. Ruby has built a stellar team of stylists and she oversees and coaches them during their appointments and holds them to a standard of ✨excellence✨
I see Lauren who is an absolute gem and an incredible artist. I get all sorts of fashion color from her and it is worth every single penny. Even with all the bleach and color I get, they prioritize keeping my hair healthy.
They provide snacks and drinks and the salon feels warm and welcoming, always decked out for any given holiday. They also have the hair washing sinks that give you neck and head support which is a game changer.
One thing that really stands out is how the stylists always jump in to help each other with their clients. It’s not unusual to have two stylists working on my hair while a third mixes up colors. What they can do with color is absolute witchcraft… unreal. I love the cuts I have gotten there too.
Every stylist is sweet, welcoming, and amazingly talented, but Lauren and April really shine with fashion color.

I’ve been going to Ruby almost 10 years now, and The Laboratory since it opened. Not only is Ruby a talented colorist and stylist, but her team (Alexis, Josselyn, Molly, Sonya, and Lauren) is such fun to be around. There’s always so much laughter and interesting conversation, making the atmosphere so engaging. And bonus, they always pull out amazing decor for Halloween and the Holidays!

The last few years I have been experimenting more with colors (brights & pastels). Ruby always gets the color to fade into my desired outcome. From matching my Halloween costume to everyday whims, every look has been stunning. The last one we did was a peak-a-boo rainbow, that once faded had the holographic effect.

Let’s just say if I ever moved out of the DMV, I would be back every 8 weeks to come to The Laboratory and see Ruby and her amazing team!...more

I've been doing my hair with Ruby for the past 3 years, and I wouldn't let anyone else it. This is the absolute best place to go if you're going to get creative with your hair, specially if you're getting highlights! They only use super high-quality products and will explain every step of the way if you're curious. My hair gets damaged easily with bleach, but they're able to highlight me like crazy with minimal damage, so Ive had every color imaginable on my hair and loved it!

Everyone is also so welcoming and attentive! They keep a laid back, friendly atmosphere (and snacks!) They all work as a team, so they're constantly giving each other cool ideas and tips for their clients, and Ruby always makes sure everyone is happy and comfortable with what they're doing.

It is not often you can say no matter who you go to at the salon you will not be disappointed. All the staff are very talented and friendly, not to mention honest with you about your hair journey.
